  DU'AA OF DAF'IL HUZN

Tasbeeh: "Innama ashku bassi wa huzni illallaah wa Aalamo minallaahe ma la ta’lamoon.”

Meaning: Prophet Ya'qub (Jacob) made a plea in the court of Allaah Ta'aala Almighty, "I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allaah, and I know from Allaah that which you do not know."

Explanation: The above-mentioned holy Qur'anic verse is in Surah Yusuf. Upon the disappearance and separation of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), Prophet Ya'qub went through such intense suffering and grief—a pain and distress equivalent to what 70 mothers would feel separated from their child—which separated him from his beloved, only son. Prophet Ya'qub had been informed that surely one day he would meet his most beloved son, Yusuf.

However, due to his intense grief, he had forgotten this glad tiding given by Allaah Almighty. O Ya'qub! You expressed great despair when both of your sons, Prophet Yusuf and Binyamin (Benjamin), were separated from you. You offered these words of prayer in the court of Allaah, "O my Lord! Will You not show mercy to me? You have taken away both my eyes, my sons, made me blind, and even separated my beloved, the light of my life, and my vision from me."

At that moment, a divine revelation (Wahi) descended from Allaah Almighty, saying, "O Ya'qub! Even if both of them were dead, I would give them life again. I will fulfill your hopes and bring both of them back to you. But, O Ya'qub! Do you remember the slaughtered goat that you and your family ate completely, devouring it entirely? Alas! Do you know that the people around your house were fasting? They had no food for Iftaar. They went to sleep hungry, while you ate meat to your full. Out of that, you did not give even a little bit to those hungry people."

Prophet Ya'qub realized his mistake. He prayed intensely and sought forgiveness. By the command of the Divine, Prophet Ya'qub's hope was rekindled, and he told his sons, "Go! O my sons! Go out in search of Prophet Yusuf and his brother. Do not despair of the mercy of Allaah Almighty. Despair is the practice of the disbelievers."

To dispel grief and sorrow, if a person recites this Tasbeeh 10 times in the morning and evening with complete faith and ablution (Wuzu), Allaah Almighty will instill peace in their heart and protect them from the things that cause grief.
